Procida

It is a small island with fastigiated coasts that has conserved its character and its spontaneous architecture and bright Mediterranean colours.
The island a time was famous with the name of terra Casata (built land); successively in the 16th century it was fortified in order to reject the barbaric assaults, taking the name of Terra Murata (wall land). On the hill there is the castle palace of the Counts Avalos; this family had in feud the island from 1529 to 1729. The residence constructed around the half of the 16th century has a man eristic character, modified then in century XVIII from Fuga and Vanvitelli, when it became real hunting reservoir. In 1830 it became a jail until 1985, afterwards abandoned. In the same zone the church of Saint Michele Arcangelo, founded in XI the century, but reconstructed in the 16th century.
The inhabited nuclei are found in Marina di Chiaiolella, Marina di Corricella and Marina Grande.
Marina di Chiaiolella is on the southern coast with a long beach, one of the preferred from the tourists.
Marina di Corricella is characterized by a village of fishermen with coloured houses.
Marina Grande, said also Marine of Sancio the Catholic, is the traditional landing place for who comes from Naples or Pozzuoli.
At last we could not neglect the little island of Vivara, connected to the island from a isthmus. The little island was colonized before Procida, like some objects of the XVI and XIV sec. to B. C. testify.
